The primary goal of MorBase is the promotion of the scientific knowledge related to the cultural heritage of Montemor-o-Novo, through the guidelines of public archaeology, presenting the data and scientific interpretations to the general public, thus enabling the interaction with the scientific community. To captivate the audience and make them aware of what is theirs by cultural heritage, translating that which is their historical past, is the duty of an archaeologist and of those who manage our cultural heritage. It is in this context that the MorBase project, overseen by the Municipality of Montemor-o-Novo, was created.
That is why it is important to clarify that, during its consolidation as a project, Morbase is not only for the population of Montemor, it is also theirs. Having the population involved in the disclosure of their cultural heritage is crucial, as it promotes its integration and a better understanding of what their cultural heritage really is.
The awareness for cultural heritage will ease its prophylactic preservation, empowering individuals with knowledge towards prevention and not just remediation.
It is also intended that MorBase becomes a platform capable of encouraging the innovation of techniques regarding the apprehension of scientific knowledge while at same time regarding the registration and dialog with our cultural heritage, developing public and experimental archaeology.
The final stage of making an inventory of archaeological heritage is communicating its scientific results to the general public. That is precisely what the online platform MorBase is all about, the publishing of the results of years of inventory work developed at the service of the Cultural Heritage of the Municipality of Montemor-o-Novo which, during this period, remained almost hidden from the general public. In an ever more globalizing world and with the constantly evolving capabilities provided by the computer industry, publishing our data has now become a priority.
In short, MorBase is not only a platform for the population of Montemor but also a tool for researchers and every individual interested in the movable and immovable, material and immaterial, cultural heritage of Montemor-o-Novo.
