Located inside the walls of the Castle of MontemoroNovo, Santa Maria do Bispo
was the main church of the ancient village in the 16th century. Today a monument in
ruins, the documentary “Santa Maria do Bispo 3D – MontemoroNovo 1534” tells
the story of this church and how it was rebuilt with the use of new technologies and
scientific knowledge acquired with the study of historical sources, pictorial records
and similar architectonic structures.

Discovered on an April's afternoon in 1963, after a stone quarry explosion, the Gruta do Escoural (Escoural Cave) proved to be an essential site for the history of archeology in Portugal. What it represents today, transcends its touristic value, and is considered an international reference for the Paleolithic art as the westernmost point of Europe with such artistic representations of the Prehistoric period.
16th Century Pottery of the Monastery of Santo António de Lisboa in Montemor-o-Novo

In a complete state of ruin in the mid-20th century and before its architectural reconstruction, in its vaults the monastery of Santo António de Lisboa (better known as Saint Anthony of Padua) in Montemor-o-Novo was hiding a unique pottery collection, in a national perspective, relating to the 16th century. Due to its specificity and quantity, this collection of the Archaeology Museum of Montemor-o-Novo is a unique example for the understanding of its historical context, not only by the representation of these pieces as utilitarian objects, but also by their reuse as architectural building elements.
The Crypt Of The Mascarenhas Family

The Mascarenhas family had a strong connection to the Alcaidaria of Montemor-o-Novo and being heavily involved in financing the construction of many of those which are now considered historic monuments in the city. In these works, D. Fernão Martins de Mascarenhas was the central figure and he was the one who issued the construction of his family's mausoleum in Convento da Saudação. In the crypt of the Mascarenhas family, on his grave there was a sword. It belonged to his father, D. João, who fought in the battle of Ksar el-Kibir (Alcácer Quibir).
Pottery of Montemor-o-Novo

We have documental evidence and archaeological data tracing the pottery activity in Montemor-o-Novo back to the 14th century. However, it was in the 16th century that this pottery center in the region of Alentejo reached its golden age placing it at the same level of other great pottery production centers like Estremoz, Évora or Lisbon. Surpassed in the 18th century by the pottery center of Caldas da Rainha, it began to lose its strength until it completely faded in the middle of the 20th century.
